- Hartz Mountains National Park

The Hartz Mountains National Park is situated in the south-west of Tasmania. The beautiful landscape which has been shaped by glaciers, the alpine vegetation and the small glacial lakes make this Park something special.

It's 85 km southwest of Hobart and there's only an unsealed road leading to the small carpark.

As the walking tracks are not always clearly marked the "Hartz Mountains Day Walk Map and Notes" comes useful. We bought it at Geeveston Information Centre. In Geeveston there's also a very nice and comfortable Backpackers "Bob's Bunkhouse"...

There are a couple of short walkes but some more difficult and loger walkes as well.

We decided to climb Hartz Peak (1255m) the highest point within the park that took us ~ 5 hours return. We read that in fine weather you can actually enjoy one of the best views of the south-west. It was bad luck the weather was fine when we walked uphill and climbed the short tricky parts over loose rocks and boulders but when we finally reached the top it all became very foggy.
